IS HIJAB COMPULSORY?
I am a Muslim, a father and husband. I told my wife and daughter, as free individuals, they may choose to or not to wear the hijab as it is only a culture and identity not a compulsory religious act. They, however must dress decently as the Qur'an has commanded by covering their bosoms and extended below the knee. But if they chose to add beyond what was required of them... It is their choice. Hijab was originally a semitic culture informed not by religion but by environment. In fact that is why in the past (and to some extent today) semite men wear the turban too to protect themselves from extreme sun heat and desert dust. When Islam came it gave out the basics in dress code for women
Qur'an 24:31 "Tell the believing women.... Not to display their beauty except what is apparent thereof, and to draw their covering over their breasts...."
Apparently God wants women to cover the provocative parts of their body (breasts, buttocks, thigh) in order not to arouse desire in men. But if anyone decided to cover himself from head to toe.. It is his choice but musnt impose it on others in the name of religion.
